About
Vinay is a passionate corporate, commercial and a litigation lawyer and an intellectual property law attorney with thirty plus years valuable law firm and corporate in-house work experience.
Admitted on the rolls of the Bar Council of Maharashtra & Goa in 1993, Vinay began his career with the Mumbai (formerly Bombay), India, based full-service law firm Crawford Bayley & Co. Vinay has never looked back since then.
- Advised and representing Morgan Stanley in its joint venture with JM Financial Ltd where each Party cross licensed their respective trade names and which led to the formation of the joint venture company JM Morgan Stanley.
- Advised and represented the lead managers on Indian laws in Larsen & Toubro Limited’s Global Depositary Receipt Issue including its Green Shoe Option.
- Advised and represented the lead managers on Indian laws in Tube Investments of India Limited’s Global Depositary Receipt Issue.
- Advising and representing lead managers on Indian laws in External Commercial Borrowings issues by various Indian entities.
- Advising and representing ITC Hotels Limited in litigation in a dispute with the owners of the Sea Rock Hotel pursuant to the Mumbai bomb blasts in 1993.
- Attending to the acquisition of the Bengaluru based Heritage Winery and Resort by Sula Vineyards through a slump sale,.
- Attending the acquisition of Krishna Oberoi, Hyderabad by the Indian Hotels Company Limited.
- Advising and representing The Indian Hotels Company Ltd and its Directors in a high-stake litigation involving Cox & Kings Ltd (also popularly known as the Travel Desk case).
- Advising and representing Symantec in a counterfeit action involving ‘Norton Antivirus’ software.
- Advising and representing Fender Musical Instruments Corporation in managing its Indian portfolio of shape marks of its various guitars.
- Advising and representing Medtronic in assignment and recordal of patents acquired from Indian inventors.
- Advising and representing Shangrila Hotels and Resorts, Hong Kong in enforcing its intellectual property rights in the trade name and mark ‘Shangrila’ which was dishonestly adopted and used by an amusement water park in India.
- Advising and representing Nandos, South Africa in enforcing its rights in the trade name and mark ‘NANDOS’ and ‘PERI PERI’ basis their global protection, despite having none in India.
- Represented Hero Electric Vehicles Private Limited in enforcing a negative covenant in a Family Settlement Agreement and a Trade Marks and Name Agreement, in high stake litigation and arbitrations. The disputes involved the determination of the ownership and use of the house mark ‘HERO’.
- Advising and attending to Pidilite Industries Limited’s trade mark and copyright portfolios in India and globally.
- Advising and representing Pidilite Industries Limited in acquisitions and sale of entities and where assignment of trademarks, copyright and designs figured.
- Advising and attending to Pidilite Industries Limited’s domestic and global IP litigation.
- Advising and representing Roots Corporation/Roots Canada in relation to its Indian portfolio of trade marks.
- Advising and representing Roots Corporation Ltd in protecting and enforcing its rights in the prominent trade and service mark ‘Ginger’ (branded Ginger Hotels) across various locations in India.
- Advising and representing Tata Consultancy Services Limited in protecting and enforcing its brand ‘TCS’ and its then prominent tag line ‘EXPERIENCE CERTAINTY’ in India and globally.
- Advising and representing The Indian Hotels Company Ltd in protecting and enforcing its various brands and sub-brands.
- Advising and representing Bajaj Auto Ltd in trademark matters India and globally.
- Advising and representing Pest Control of India in protecting and enforcing its rights in trademarks and designs.
- Advising and representing Greenply Industries Limited in protecting and enforcing its rights in trademarks.
- Advising and representing the Mahindra Group in protecting and enforcing its rights in trademarks.
- Advising and representing the Godrej Group (pre-partition) in protecting and enforcing its rights in trademarks and copyright.
- Advising and representing Crompton Greaves Ltd in protecting and enforcing its rights in trademarks and copyrights.
- Advised and represented late Mr. Ameen Sayani in copyright matters in the Binaca Geet Mala radio programs produced by him.

She has been mentioned in various publications as one of the leading IP Attorneys in the country and was also named in the list of lawyers published as “40 under 45” to watch amongst the legal community in India. She was also named as the IP Star Woman of the Year in the 2019 Legal Era Intellectual Property Awards. She has also been ranked as the Top Managing Partner (above 10 years experience) by India Forbes Legal Powerlist 2020.
She has personally been consistently ranked by World Trade Mark Review for ‘strategy’. She has served in various INTA committees for more than a decade now and is also a co-chair of the INTA’s India initiative to collaborate with the Indian Government (DIPP) for the spread of IP awareness amongst school going children.
